Role Reasoning: Abel and his brother are a double act, as canonly stated by them. They complete each-other in a way that's laced to their very being. Where Cain would more than likely be a Myth, the evil of the story, Abel is his supporting cast in that sense. He fulfills the role of victim and target for his brother. Even outside of their specific story he often fulfills the purpose of lackey or sidekick and the story teller to visitors, supporting their nightmarish experiences with his skills. He’s rarely the center of the story and even in the Dreaming where he was separated from Cain, he was incomplete in his essence.

What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?

The most important relationship in Abel’s life, before and after becoming a part of the Dreaming, would be his brother Cain. As much as it might seem one sides, Abel and Cain need each other in equal measure. Abel allows himself to be hurt, abused, murdered by Cain on a regular basis in the name of their story, but they’ve both said independently how they are each other's one thing they care about or love. Abel would do anything for Cain, and wishes they could get along more but understands it isn’t in Cain’s nature to defy the murderous needs he has.

What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise.

Abel always feels like he could improve his confidence when it comes to his work, or even just in general. He slags in this way frequently, from his bumbling and clumsy actions to his stuttering and stammering speech. It manifests in these ways and he often is overlooked or given the short end of the stick not only by Cain but by other Dreams as well. He tries to stick up for himself now and then but it’s not very effective. He wants to be as bold as his Brother or as put together as Dreams like the Librarian but he tends to fall short more often than not.

Is your character capable of forgiveness or will they hold a grudge until they die? Would anything ever make them change their mind?

One would say he’s far too forgiving. With his brother this is most evident. Despite Cain having murdered him in their human, biblical lifetime, Abel was the one who requested Dream contract Cain to tell stories alongside him. This came with the caveat in their deal that they retell their original story time and time again. As such Cain frequently kills Abel in brutal and often gruesome fashion. Abel rarely if ever takes issue with this, and usually it’s not so much the act he spites and more time and place. He excuses poor behaviors too much and often doesn’t realize when others intend to slight him until it's too late. Even then he feels more bad about letting it happen than angry at the aggressing parties.

What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed?

By far Abel feels the most comfortable in the House of Secrets. His grounds and domain in the dreaming which he was contracted as the caretaker for. He tells stories here to passing dreamers and conjures spooky and scary tales of horror, weaving nightmares for them with the themes of the namesake- Secrets! Though he doesn’t have as much of a stomach for the really frightening stuff like Cain, he still by far acts with more confidence and boldness, as well as daring to be more terrifying in the halls of the House of Secrets. He also has his company here too, of Goldie the Gargoyle and occasionally his brother, both of which he finds comfort in though the former the more kindly one compared to the latter.

What would your character sacrifice to get what they want or to reach their potential? What have they sacrificed already?

Abel has made a prominent sacrifice in recent times. When the Dreaming was being infected by an AI and the lord Dream himself was kept away, Cain and Abel were investigating a form of the AI - a cocoon of sorts containing it. When it came down to the wire Cain had intended to sacrifice Abel to it to gain its favor. Finally fed up and wanting to turn the tides, Abel instead killed cain- who didn’t resurrect as Abel had expected he would. Cain remained dead in the AI’s programming while Abel became the AI- the new lord’s right hand for a time. Eventually it came that the status quo was restored, in part due to Abel finding Cain in the system and sacrificing himself then to reset everything.

Writing Samples:
1. Abel’s lips press into a worried line and he nodded along with concern. “Very! But-“ he started to argue but quickly shut up and nodded fervently. “Yes, right, of course!” He didn’t hesitate to scramble over to where John’s coat had been discarded, starting to be covered by flame which Abel didn’t hesitate to stamp out after just. Well. Grabbing it with his hands from the fire. He only winced a bit and didn’t seem to unphased as he went to snuffing out what was on it. In his defence it worked, even if the coat was singed.

Abel frowned as he went back over to John with it, shoving his hand in a pocket and pulling out the box of cigarettes, less singed and ruined than one would expect. “It g- it got you in the back did ah… did it? That’s a n- a n- nasty one usually..” he said with a tone of experience.

Abel carefully toddled around the pool of blood to drape constantine with the coat a bit before he went to hand a cigarette off only to reach past back to the fire. He used it to light it for him before then handing it towards him.

“Will y- will you be uh.. so- sorry- will you be alright? Can I help? With th- the ah.. the … anything here?”


2. Abel perked up as the nickname came out and his polite smile turned to a bright, goofy grin. He moved up to the door as it was opened and bowed his head, before wobbling back to make sure he didn't drop the comically large box in his arms.

"It's good t- to finally meet you, Lonnie!" He beamed brightly and goldie chirped on his shoulder, "Goldie says 'ello too! She's ah- she's happy to t'see you again too!" He didn't pause much, instead trucking right on in towards the main auditorium. He seemed to know his way around to the main stage fairly well. "So- Sorry I couldn't come out before- with the ah.. tea, still had to keep watch of the house, things b-being so new. Yes?"

He trudged his way forwards to some tables set out by the front of the stage, setting down the large box and the basket off to the side. "B-but now! Now Cain is.. um. He's occupied with- ah. Other things, so I can go out more without him too!" He moved back to the cakebox and pulled the bow of its tie undone, the box falling open to a cake with intricate icing designs from Phantom of the Opera.
